Abstract
Abstract
This paper describes the design, construction and initial testing of an experimental rig for the measurement of dynamic loading of an automotive timing chain under realistic running conditions. The novel instrumentation system developed for this application is described, together with the mechanical construction of the measurement system. Results are presented for a two-sprocket drive under constant load. Clear variations in chain link tension around the chain loop are shown, and these are explained in terms of position, sprocket run-out and sprocket polygonal action.
