Abstract
This review looks at the basic classes of elastic contacts and provides practical information about the kind of response which can be expected when loads are applied. Attention is given to all kinds of contact except those which can be analysed using half-plane theory (like Hertz) and their general features explained. These remarks are relevant to all kinds of contact solutions, whether obtained partly by analytical methods or purely by numerical means.
