Abstract

The MATADOR special issue of the Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part B: Journal of Engineering Manufacture presents a selection of suitably enhanced papers from the 40th International MATADOR Conference on advanced manufacturing. All papers included in this special issue have gone through the rigorous journal peer review process.
The acronym MATADOR stands for: Manufacturing; Automation and Systems; Technology; Applications; Design; Organisation and Management; and Research. The MATADOR conference is one of the longest established and sustained conferences in manufacturing founded in 1959. The conference is normally held in the United Kingdom at The University of Manchester or hosted by a carefully selected international partner and key Centre in manufacturing research.
The 40th MATADOR conference was successfully held in China for the first time, organised by the Zhenjiang University of Technology in Hangzhou, China on 8–10 July 2019.
The papers of this Special Issue – MATADOR, contribute new knowledge and understanding in manufacturing science covering the following areas:
Advances in design and additive manufacture for bone tissue engineering
Advances in laser material processing and surface texture characterization.
Advances in mechanical, electrical discharge and laser machining and cutting
Research on friction stir welding
Research on high-speed aerostatic spindles
Sustainability in manufacturing and selecting conditions for energy smart manufacturing
