Abstract
This article assesses the role of academic research in industrial innovation, with specific reference to the UK context. Critical business sectors are discussed – issues addressed include expenditure on research, the advantages to industry of using university research capabilities, the commercial assessment of research and innovation, and the key elements required to build a successful relationship between university research and industry. Finally, Dr Roberts examines the various options open to universities for the transfer of technology and knowledge to the marketplace.
