Abstract
In Canada as elsewhere in the industrialized world, collaboration between industry and academia is a critical factor in technological growth. Ottawa, which is a major site of higher education and technological enterprise, is used as an example of the factors which facilitate successful linkages between firms and universities. The results are based on surveys and interviews of parties on both sides of the divide in Ottawa. They show that local factors are of paramount importance, but that the intended and actual outcomes of initiatives are not always the same.
