Abstract
This article describes the patterns of employment of new first-degree graduates in the UK in 1985 – the latest year for which all the figures are available. It shows the distribution of new graduates across manufacturing, industry and the rest of the economy. It also looks at the degree subjects recruited by the various sectors of the economy and the occupations for which the graduates were recruited. Finally, the article considers in particular the destinations of the new graduate engineers, who employs the best graduates, and what have been the trends since 1976 in the distribution of new graduates across the economy.
