Abstract
This article describes a Learning Strategies Institute designed to update and enhance the skills of 70 resource room teachers of LD students in their knowledge and use of cognitive learning strategies. The workshops focused on questioning, listening and note-taking, test-taking, and memory across the academic domains of language arts, social studies, science, and math. The themes central to the four workshops were the potential of cognitive strategy instruction for improving the academic performance of LD students, the importance of providing explicit strategy instruction, and the importance of explicitly teaching the value and purpose of cognitive learning strategies. This institute demonstrated that collaborative efforts between colleges and universities and local school systems can be effective in linking current research findings with practical applications.
