Taking off from the contributions by Baumann and Caglar this paper examines the problem of cultural difference (ethnic, religious) within the nation-state. It rejects the thesis that the modern nation-state produces a homogeneous national culture. Instead it argues that it produces a space in which new differences, new resistances and new inequalities emerge.
