Denmark, as a Scandinavian welfare society, serves as an example of a country that since the 1960s has witnessed considerable change in the role of mothers and day care attendance of young children. Such change has in fact challenged widely held beliefs. Ideological interpretations, mainly negatively loaded beliefs, are considered about the child's life in family and society both past and present. The beliefs are critically discussed in light of current research.
