Abstract
Israel’s campaign to obliterate Gaza stands out as one of the worst atrocities in recent history. Any serious examination of the West’s role in Israel’s actions must confront the responsibilities of Europe – particularly the European Union and its member states. Both Europe’s multipronged backing of Israel and the historically important role that Europe has played in Palestine necessitate such an inquiry. How is it that Europe’s relationship with Israel remains intact even in the case of the most serious crimes? The article will undertake a self-criticism of Europe and the EU. The article will thereby reflect on Gaza’s destruction by drawing on the tradition of humanist thought. Anti-Palestinian racism will be shown to be of decisive significance in Europe’s stance. Underlying the anti-Palestinian racism is an abnegation of humanism which has entangled Europe in crimes against humanity.
