Abstract
James Petras is one of the most important sociologists of the 20th century, having made significant contributions to a critical Marxist tradition in sociological and political analysis. This essay provides an overview and appreciation of James Petras’s writings and the body of his work over the past 40 years, as well as an introduction to the other articles in this special issue of Critical Sociology. All of these articles were written to honour James Petras’s contributions to the formation of a critical tradition in sociological analysis.
