Abstract
A heating system was developed for the filament winding of thermoplastic composites An infrared preheating section combined with hot gas torches for local bond ing at the mandrel turned out to be effective and controllable The system was tested by studying the consolidation of two prepregs. A partially impregnated PETP/glass fiber material showed rather poor bonding at normal winding speeds, as investigated by shear tests. For a fully impregnated PA12/aramid tape, better consolidation was achieved. For both materials, optimum bonding could only be approached by thermal post treatment or very low winding velocities (≤ 1 cm/s). For most practical purposes, the processing char acteristics of both prepregs appear adequate.
