Abstract
In response to the increased integration of students with disabilities into mainstream elementary and secondary classrooms, many teacher education programs are requiring all prospective teachers to take at least one special education course. However, there is little evidence that these courses give teachers the competencies they need. Regular classroom teachers with at least one year of experience who had taken such a course were queried as to the value of the information presented to them after they had begun to teach with mainstreamed students in their classrooms. Suggestions were also sought concerning additional topics and experiences that would further strengthen the preparation of other regular classroom teachers in the future.
