The current infusion of microcomputer technology into the schools has major implications for the training of special education personnel. Teachers must be adequately prepared to use microcomputers in the classroom, if the potential benefits of the new technology are to be realized. Further, microcomputers offer a novel pedagogical tool for training special educators about instructional computer applications and traditional educational practices. This article discusses the dual role of the microcomputer as a focus and a medium for training special educators. Current issues, applications, and outcomes surrounding the impact of microcomputer technology on the preparation of special education personnel are explored. Implications for inservice and preservice training of special educators are also discussed.
