This article summarizes the findings of a community-based survey of
violence against 781 women in the Rochester, New York, area that was
generated by a social action organization and used a participatory
research model. The survey assessed the prevalence of violence, the
types of situations that make women feel at risk, and how women both
defend themselves against potential victimization and make behav
ioral changes to avoid it.
