Utilizing Jean Baker Miller's ideas that the need to serve and the need to affiliate are the two most significant aspects of the psychic structure of women, the author argues that Miller's formulation can help the practitioner to reframe women's psychiatric symptoms and thus to understand the difficulty women have in moving from other-directed to self-enhancing activities.
