Abstract
Numerous countries have introduced initiatives to promote active school travel (AST) among children, encouraging safe and healthy commuting to school. However, limited research has examined the effectiveness of various interventions across diverse global and contextual settings. This review provides a comprehensive summary of global AST programs, their interventions, impacts, and key insights, pinpointing effective mechanisms applicable in both general and contextual scenarios. Our analysis categorizes AST programs into three types, featuring four intervention types and identifying eight recommendations for application in various regions. These practical insights offer valuable guidance for the development of AST programs in diverse geographical contexts.
