Cet article propose un essai de théorisation sur le rôle de l’appropriation dans le processus d’achat d’occasion. Il fait émerger le concept d’appropriabilité, défini comme le potentiel plus ou moins élevé d’un objet à devenir la possession pleine et entière d’un consommateur. La définition de ce potentiel dépend de la prégnance de la trace du/des précédent(s) propriétaire(s) et de la nature de la motivation qui a conduit à se le procurer. Les deux séquences du processus d’appropriation d’un objet d’occasion seront définies par ce potentiel : (1) la mise à distance, dont l’intensité varie selon la prégnance de la trace de l’autre et (2) la mise en soi, dont les stratégies – le déni, la créativité ou la maîtrise – dépendent de la nature de la motivation d’achat.
