Les promotions bénéficient-elles aux fabricants,aux distributeurs,ou aux deux ?

Abstract

Les promotions sur les prix créent-elles des revenus additionnels et pour qui ? Quelles marques, catégories ou conditions de marché influencent les bénéfices promotionnels et leur allocation entre fabricants et distributeurs ? Pour répondre à ces questions, nous avons conduit une enquête économétrique à grande échelle sur les effets des promotions sur les prix sur les revenus des fabricants, les revenus des distributeurs et les profits totaux (marges).

La première découverte majeure est qu'une promotion sur un prix n'a généralement pas d'effets monétaires permanents pour chacune des deux parties. Deuxièmement, les promotions sur les prix ont, de manière prédominante, un impact positif sur les revenus des fabricants, mais leurs effets sur les revenus des distributeurs sont mitigés. De plus, les marges de distributeur sur la catégorie sont habituellement réduites par les promotions sur les prix. Même en tenant compte des effets intercatégories et de fréquentation du magasin, nous trouvons encore la preuve que les promotions sur les prix ne sont pas profitables pour le distributeur. Troisièmement, nos résultats indiquent que les élasticités des revenus des fabricants sont plus élevées pour les promotions sur les marques à faible part de marché, pour les marques fréquemment en promotion et pour les marques nationales dans des catégories de produit achetées de manière impulsive, caractérisées par un faible degré de prolifération des marques et de marques de distributeurs (MDD). Les élasticités des revenus des distributeurs sont plus élevées pour les marques avec des promotions fréquentes et importantes, pour les produits d'appel, et dans les catégories avec un faible degré de prolifération des marques. Enfin, les élasticités des marges des distributeurs sont plus élevées pour les promotions sur les marques à faible part de marché et pour les marques avec des promotions peu fréquentes et importantes. Nous discutons des implications managériales de nos résultats à la fois pour les fabricants et les distributeurs.
