Cosmetic surgery has been performed for thousands of years. But it was not until the 20th century with advances in medicine and technology that allowed elective cosmetic surgery to be performed safely. This article reviews the history of the specialty as well as the contributions made by Dr Richard Webster and the importance of fellowship training for the future of the specialty.
