In this article, we show what happens when students are asked to tell some of what they know about something on which they are experts—them— selves. In particular, students' views of their own learning and personal literacy goals are shared. The article discusses reasons for engaging students in self assessment and goal setting through the use of portfolios. Recommended strategies and procedures to support both processes are also presented.
