Abstract
A commercial durable flame retardant for cotton, PYROVATEX CP, generally shown in the literature as N-methylol-3-dimethoxyphosphoryl propionamide, has been found not to be an individual compound but consists of several major species: N-methylol-3-dimethoxyphosphorylpropionamide, N-methoxymethyl-3-dimethoxyphosphorylpropionamide, N,N'-oxydimethyl enebis(3-dimethoxyphosphorylpropionamide) and 3-dimethoxyphosphorylpro pionamide. Various grades and sources of PYROVATEX CP have these compo nents in different proportions. The complexity of PYROVATEX CP composition is the result of complications in treating 3-dimethoxyphosphorylpropionamide with commercial formaldehyde containing methanol.
