Abstract
This study examines the challenges and potential solutions for supporting staff who care for nursing home residents with dementia and other comorbidities in the U.S. Data were collected from 38 nursing home staff members across nine nursing facilities in Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. Participants completed a survey consisting of three open-ended questions regarding the comorbidities that make it challenging to provide care to residents who also have dementia, the causes of the difficulties in managing care for them, and potential solutions. Respondents identified key challenges such as managing the complex needs of residents with both mental health conditions and chronic diseases, staffing shortages, communication barriers, and family awareness and expectations. The study suggests several strategies for improving care quality: increasing funding for dementia programs, ensuring adequate staffing levels, providing comprehensive dementia training for staff, maintaining consistent caregivers, and offering support resources for families.
