`Care in the Community' has become a political slogan in the UK, but the financial and emotional implications of its realization and development have not been adequately anticipated. This account of clinical material presented to a supervision group in a Community Mental Health Resource Centre shows how patients and staff try to work together and how staff struggle to understand that work.
