`There is by no means all of Man in the animal, but there is certainly all of the animal in Man.' This dictum, ironically attributed by Konrad Lorenz (1987) to an unspecified Chinese sage, forces us to reconsider our human condition as a fundamental part of the evolutionary mainstream. Both our anatomical-functional structures and our behaviour must be considered in terms of their relationship with evolution if they are to be arranged and explained more consistently.
