This paper further develops some of the issues addressed in the Eleventh S.H. Foulkes Annual Lecture (Konig, 1987). The term `projective identification' now serves as an umbrella concept and has been extended far beyond its original meaning. The author distinguishes between transference-and defence-type, both of which have an interactional component.
