Abstract
This article is based on material obtained from survey research con ducted in 1977 and 1978 in a street in downtown Kyoto, and describes the street as two women have seen it. The personal histories of the two women provide the theme to which are connected the histories of their households, the street around the households, and the whole of Japanese society surrounding the households and the street. One woman built her own household and the other preserved a traditional household, and both accounts are important for the creation of a more satisfactory sociological theory.
