The author reflects on nearly 25 years of working as a mental health counselor. While acknowledging the need to work within limits, he argues against arbitrary external constraints on a scope of practice that involves talking, listening, and lifelong learning. The practice of counseling should be determined instead by the needs of clients who present for help with developmental difficulties that can be facilitated through human exchange and meaning making.
