Abstract
Electric two-wheelers have become an important mode of transportation for older adults in China. However, there is a notable gap in research examining the factors that influence helmet usage among older adults in China when riding an electric two-wheeler. Therefore, it was crucial to analyze the factors that affect their willingness to wear a helmet while riding an electric two-wheeler. This study aimed to examine the impact of sociodemographic characteristics, exogenous constructs in the health belief model (HBM), and the theory of planned behavior (TPB) on older adults’ intentions to use a helmet while riding an electric two-wheeler. To achieve this, a hierarchical regression model was used. Interviews were conducted with older adults who engage in electronic cycling within the urban regions of Pingdingshan City. The findings indicated that there was only a limited amount of variance in behavioral intention that could be accounted for by sociodemographic characteristics. The TPB exhibited a higher level of explanatory power compared with the HBM. Perceived severity, cues to action, subjective norms, and attitudes were found to have a significant impact on behavioral intention, whereas perceived severity, perceived barrier, and self-efficacy did not show significant influence. The influence of sociodemographic characteristics on behavioral intention was also examined.
