Abstract
The conceptual development of chronic pain syndromes in spinal cord injury has undergone considerable change in the last ten years. In the past, these pain states were often referred to as being “phantom” in nature, and not having an organic basis. “Phantom” is defined as an image formed in the mind”. However, in recent years, an association with organic pathology has led to wider acceptance of a neurogenic basis to chronic spinal cord injury pain.
