In 1897 Brigham, a US geographer, made a case for the inclusion of physical geography in school teaching. The points he made may be useful to those engaged in similar efforts today. He emphasized that the understanding of earth dynamics over time and an engagement with natural events, especially through fieldwork, together with the ability to argue from evidence, enhanced a sense of citizenship.
