Abstract
Hanan Mikhail Ashrawi was born in Nablus, Palestine in 1946. At one time a spokeswoman for the Palestinians in the Occupied Territories, and now a professor of English literature at Bir Zeit University in the West Bank, she has recently published a personal account of the Palestinian national struggle, This Side of Peace (Simon and Schuster, June 1995). She is the founder and director of the Palestinian Independent Commission for Citizens' Rights. Stephanie Genkin talked to her in Jerusalem for Index
