Abstract

In this special section we talk to journalists, past and present, about why local news coverage matters, and why the public should worry if it disappears. We dig into the challenges that local news media are having to face, such as where the money is going to come from to pay for people to do the work that’s needed. We listen to arguments that communities feel ignored and silenced when out-of-the-office local reporting dies away. Also we find examples of innovators who seek to find a different way of reporting.
