Abstract
Three combination therapies with L-PAM, 5-FU, intravenously or orally, plus or minus prednisone, were evaluated in advanced breast cancer with the purpose of identifying an active treatment to be employed as adjuvant to surgery in early breast cancer with histologically positive axillary nodes. Complete plus partial responses were as follows: L-PAM + 5-FU p.o. 7%; L-PAM + 5-FU i.v. 22%; L-PAM + 5-FU i.v. + prednisone 40%. Complete plus partial responses were definitely inferior to those achieved with available multiple drug treatments for advanced breast cancer. The combinations tested are not considered as a treatment of first choice in disseminated disease. However, their usefulness in an adjuvant situation cannot be excluded.
