Abstract
Cancer cells were identified in the circulating blood of animals with resectable colon cancers after the administration of anestetics into the tumor, manipulation, inoculation of fluids and during surgery for the removal of the primary tumor. Malignant cells were also found in the circulating blood of animal with non resectable cancers before and after manipulation, inoculation of fluids into the tumor and during an attempt to legate the primary lesion. All these procedures produced « showers » of cancer cells which persisted for about 5 minutes. Hepatic metastases after manipulation of resectable tumors were produced in 13.3 per cent of the control animals and in 35.4 per cent of the manipulated animals.
