Abstract
Twenty female Syrian golden hamsters, 7-12 weeks old, received an isograft of a single pituitary, under the renal capsule, from adult female or male donors. One animal was lost because of cannibalism. The hypophysial graft took in 18 out of the 19 remaining animals. The average lifespan of the 18 animals was of 58.5±14 weeks, 49.6±12 from the grafting time. Histologic examination of the graft showed viable anterior pituitary tissue composed mostly by cromophobe cells. In all the 18 hamsters there was a diffuse acinar hyperplasia of mammary gland with milk secretion. No mammary tumors were seen.
