Abstract
When the requirements are clearly defined, a prototype system is easy to construct. Defining the require ments for a Business Intelligence System is far more difficult and is dependent on the unique needs of each organisation. This paper reviews some of the key issues of Business Intelligence operations and their impact on the definition of a Business Intelligence system. The impact of the current, rapid developments in com puting technology on the choices available for developing a system is briefly considered. A short overview of the prototyping approach to system development is given. This is followed by a summary of the current Rolls- Royce approach to developing an in-house prototype system.
