A use of LARSP in secondary units for hearing-impaired pupils

Abstract

This article shows how LARSP—the Language Assessment, Remediation and Screening Procedure of Crystal, Fletcher and Garman, 1976—is used to evaluate the written language of severely deaf pupils in secondary hearing-impaired units. Samples of the pupils' free writing are obtained in the course of their everyday schoolwork and made available to the peripatetic teacher. They are then transcribed, analysed grammatically, and profiled on the LARSP chart. Using the completed LARSP profile it is possible to write a brief assessment report on the language used in the original sample. This article consists mainly of examples of these reports. It is intended to demonstrate how useful the LARSP analysis has been in facilitating discussion of deaf pupils' linguistic development.
