Abstract
In this article, traditional quantitative methods for collecting student opinions both at course and individual levels and possible qualitative alternatives are discussed. The latter include the use of focus groups. The authors conclude that students like this approach and that it can provide more comprehensive data than is usually available using a questionnaire methodology. They advocate a more widespread use of a focus-based approach while also acknowledging the need for a fuller evaluation of its advantages and disadvantages.
