ohn Jackson and Walter Muir
are Professors at the University
of Victoria in Victoria B. C. The
purpose of the study upon which their
paper is based was to examine how
university department chairpersons
identified and managed tenured
faculty who are not productive
members of the academic unit. They
report that up to 15 per cent of
faculty members are perceived as
being non-productive or marginal,
but that very few dismissals take
place. Some strategies for alleviating
the problem are proposed.
