Michael Harvey is at the
Department of Educational
Policy and Administrative Studies at
Edith Cowan University in Perth,
Western Australia. During an era of
school based self-management, he
suggests, surprisingly little attention
has been given to the role of the deputy
principal in the primary school. He
reports on a survey undertaken in
Western Australia which indicates that
many deputy principals lack a
significant professional identity. He
suggests ways in which this situation
might be improved.
