Within both Indian and western discourses the jungle is a space to be feared. The village is alternately idealized and patronized, but generally deemed to be more orderly than the jungle, if less ‘civilized’ than the city. This article explores discourses on both jungle and village in North India and concludes with an exploration of competing perspectives on social order in one particular Indian village.
