Bernstein's work is stimulating insofar
as it illustrates one way of thinking
about how speech communication re
flects and reforms culture. However,
by concentrating solely on speech, he
may be jumping to conclusions about
the self concepts and world views of
people within particular social setttings
that would not be warranted if one were
were to give the same consideration to
other symbolic forms of communication
those people use.
