This article reviews the status of hearing loss in the elderly from epidemiological, demographic, mental health, audiological and psychosocial standpoints. It demonstrates a marked lack of interaction between key disciplines and makes recommendations for further research and service, taking a holistic approach to management of the social, mental, and aural well-being of the elderly individual with impaired hearing in the context of modern gerontology.
