Existing life-cycle models of status attainment, including income attainment, have generally stopped short of the extension of such models into the last stage of the life-cycle, namely old age. A conceptual formulation for the inclusion of this latter stage of the life cycle is proposed, problems and methods of analysis are discussed, and some initial empirical results identifying the mechanisms of status maintenance in old age are presented.
