This introduction to the topical issue on assistive technology (AT) and support needs for individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disability begins with a rationale for AT use and continues with a brief discussion of the shift from a deficit to a support provision focus in intellectual and/or developmental disability (I/DD). The Supports Intensity Scale (SIS; Thompson et al., 2004), a measure designed specifically to assess support needs also is introduced, along with an overview of each contributing article.
