The narrative of the David and Jonathan friendship in 1 Samuel continues to fascinate modern readers as a tale of an enduring friendship under strong political and family pressures. Modern readers are apt to read the story through a lens somewhat beclouded by romanticism and anachronism. This study aims to read the David-Jonathan narratives with the help of a cross-cultural model derived from the work of the social sciences, especially cultural anthropology.
