Abstract
Surgery on humans in hospital operating theatres represents a safety-critical environment which demands high standards of computer-based equipment used in these circumstances. This paper describes a detailed method ology for fault detection and localisation for the process of drug-induced muscle relaxation. The components in such an on-line management system are represented using a common framework based on bond graphs. Several examples are given of simulated system performance under typical problems of sensor interference, syringe pump failures and changes in patient's pharmacological state. Successful fault localisation and restoration pro cedures are demonstrated.
