Traditional validation of mathematical models by visual comparison between recorded values and model calculations is regarded as too lenient. The distortion method described provides a practical quantitative validation procedure, in which the distortion that the model must undergo to match a rig or plant test record precisely is used to gauge the model. A numerical fidelity index has been derived.
