Abstract
The paper presents and discusses some of the results of a survey carried out to determine (a) to what extent the field of measurement technology is covered in undergraduate and lower-level courses; (b) whether representatives from industry and academic institutions have got together to ensure that courses on measurement technology required by industry are anticipated and met; and (c) if sufficiently modern equipment and techniques can be provided and demonstrated and whether the increasing impact on measurement technology of microprocessor and computer technology is being adequately covered. Some evidence was also gathered during the survey on the supply of and needs for measurement technologists, the status and career prospects for such technologists, employment of women in metrology and metrology centres and clubs. Possible actions to overcome the shortage of industrial measurement technologists are mentioned.
